Teen Living at DMS
Throughout the fifth grade teen living class, the students will learn about keeping themselves healthy and safe; the importance of knowing about communicable diseases and preventing them; the myths, facts and universal precautions about HIV/AIDS; the dangers of substance abuse and the need for solid self-esteem and strong personal standards. The students will also study how to develop better friendships and better relationships with their families. A short section on baby-sitting and healthy nutritional aspects of life will be covered. |
Building self confidence and understanding the consequences of our behavior will be the topic for teen living classes. We will talk about finding your values and establishing friendships, and developing better communication with our families. Other topics that will be discussed include: healthy choices and decision making concerning drugs (classifying, dangers, gateway drugs) and avoiding HIV/AIDS. The students will also study ways to make good nutritional choices throughout their lives. |
Throughout the six weeks, seventh graders will study teen living and family life. These classes will help students develop a positive self-image, understand their feelings and emotions as they relate to their physical and emotional develoopment and discuss relationships. Classes will talk about self-understanding, communication, and interpersonal relationships and personal decision-making. Classes will discuss drugs, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs as well as illegal substances. Topics will include dangers of drugs, alternatives to using drugs, advertising and promoting drugs, and attitudes towards drugs. Teen sexuality issues will be discussed and ways to prevent HIV/AIDS and other STDs will be studied. Students will explore the care of children and gender roles and the role of nutrition in their lives. |
Throughout the six weeks, teen living/family life classes will address specific issues such as relationships, communication, and dealing with emotions and physical changes. Students will start the term with a discussion of alcohol and other drugs such as tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, steroids, stimulants and depressants. Positive and negative peer pressure will be examined, as well as choices and consequences. Agencies which help people with addictions will be discussed. STDs, HIV/AIDS, and other teen sexuality problems will be reviewed and discussed. Short and long term goals and the decision-making process will be an integral part of this curriculum. During the six weeks, varying aspects of nutrition and food safety will also be taught. |
